A few dozen Chileans gathered at Plaza Dignidad in Santiago for the New Year, protesting against Piñera and for amnesty for all political prisoners. Demonstrators waving the Mapuche flag were immediately attacked by Carabineros, who used water cannons against a tiny demonstration of about 25-30 people.

Dozens of Chilean secondary school teachers gathered outside of the former Congress building in Santiago, demanding the resignation of President Sebastian Piñera and the release of political prisoners in the country, effectively shutting down several schools. Police almost immediately arrived in riot gear, making many arrests, and dispersed the crowd in anticipation of protests later in the day.
Florists gathered in Santiago to protest the forced closure of their businesses without a stimulus, and condemned the closures of "non-essential" businesses included their own while casinos and other recreational centers stayed open. The Carabineros of Chile, the national police force, proceeded to arrive at the scene with riot gear and assault the demonstrators, injuring 5.
