Chilean Police Crackdown on Teachers’ Strike Demanding Release of Political Prisoners in Santiago

Dozens of Chilean secondary school teachers gathered outside of the former Congress building in Santiago, demanding the resignation of President Sebastian Piñera and the release of political prisoners in the country, effectively shutting down several schools. The Carabineros/FFEE National Police almost immediately arrived in riot gear, making many arrests, and dispersed the crowd in anticipation of protests later in the day.

Protesters chanted the following slogans:

“El rico nunca entra y el pobre nunca sale!” – “The wealthy never enter [prison] and the poor never leave!”
“Liberen, liberen, a los presos por luchar!” – “Free, free the prisoners for struggling!”
