About 50 New Yorkers protested in the neighborhood of Crown Heights, demanding police defunding, rent cancellation, the abolition of ICE, and more, marching west with a heavy police presence following them. The crowd dispersed peacefully, and no arrests occurred.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in the Athens suburb of New Smyrna, or Nea Smyrni, following an incident of police brutality in which an officer brutally beat a civilian under the guise of enforcing COVID restrictions. Police proceeded to attack the demonstration with tear gas, which reportedly leaked into the homes of civilians and into trams.
Around 1000 protesters returned to the streets of Asunción for a 3rd day to demand the resignation of the president following a collapse in the healthcare system of Paraguay, with elective surgeries such as appendix removal halted altogether and medicine at a critically low supply. After gathering in front of the ex-president’s house, an avid supporter of the current government, demonstrators were tear-gassed and forced to disperse.
Through the week of 13-20 September 2020, several activist groups belonging to the O’Odham and Kumeyaay indigenous tribes have been arrested for protesting the wall and halting construction. 2 O’Ohdham activists have been arrested on Class B misdemeanor charges, while other Kumeyaay protesters have been brutalized by police.
Dozens of protesters in Frankfurt gathered at the Greek embassy in the German city in solidarity with the Koufontinas hunger strike, demanding the immediate satisfaction by the government of the communist prisoner’s request to be returned to his old cell at the Korydallos prison.
