Medical Workers from the Barros Luco Hospital in Santiago went on strike for more funds to handle the COVID-19 pandemic, and improvements in medical infrastructure. They also demanded freedom for the political prisoners during the October uprising, that has now been ongoing for longer than a year.
Dozens of protesters clashed with Carabineros in the central coastal city of Valparaíso in Chile, during a demonstration on the anniversary of the police murder of Neco Moras & Ariel Moreno during a football game in 2020. Extreme amounts of tear gas were deployed, in response to which protesters threw rocks and Molotov cocktails at armored vehicles.
Anarchists in Thessaloniki gathered to protest in solidarity with Dimitris Koufontinas, a former member of the 17 November revolutionary group who went on hunger strike starting on the 8th of January, demanding his transfer to the Korydallos prison in Athens which would allow him to see visitors and receive adequate medical treatment. A heavy police buildup arrived at the demonstration, detaining 7 participants without clause of arrest, later releasing them.
Hundreds of protesters in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli returned to the streets for a 2nd day of demonstrations against a curfew and lockdown enacted without any stimulus, which has led to many people working illegally. The military of Lebanon arrived on the scene after a militia’s headquarters were attacked, arresting several youths who did not disperse but rather regrouped around areas devoid of law enforcement.
Dozens of Chilean activists and street medics gathered at Plaza Dignidad in Santiago to protest for amnesty for all political prisoners and in commemoration of the murder of the Mapuche warrior Matías Catrileo on the 3rd of January in 2007. Demonstrators were immediately subjected to chemically tainted water cannons, with many left having scars and burns. One protester was also thrown to the ground and injured by a water cannon blast that hit them directly.
