Hundreds of Chilean protesters in the Santiago commune of Puente Alto marched to demand the abolition of police and the resignation of right-wing President Sebastian Piñera. Intense clashes with Carabineros (Chilean law enforcement) occurred, resulting in the torching of a gas station.

100 protesters gathered in Minneapolis for a New Year’s noise demo outside of prisons, following suit with dozens of other cities across the world. Confrontations with police occurred, with 21 people arrested and 12 booked at the protest.
Protests continue across the country, with several communes rising up against their local police and military forces. Dozens of people were injured, although government forces were beaten back in several areas. A factory was burned down in Renca, and clashes between police and protesters ensued.
Around 150-200 students gathered in front of the Propylaea in Athens to protest against a law passed by the Ministry of Education which would enable police to enter universities for the first time in 1975. The demonstration was forced to disperse, however, after police blocked anyone from entering the road.
