Thousands of protesters gathered in Madrid to demand the release of Pablo Hasel, the communist Catalan rapper arrested under charges of criticizing the monarchy. Demonstrators assembled in Puerta del Sol, where police attempted to kettle the crowd and assaulted several people. Hundreds of people then broke police lines, then also placing barricades and setting fires in the streets.
Dozens of protesters in San Antonio took to the streets for a 2nd consecutive day as part of a port workers’ strike across Chile, demanding the government passage of a bill that would allow for individuals to withdraw 10% of their pension funds in a direct payment for a 3rd time during the COVID pandemic. Police attacked the port workers, leading to heavy clashes with barricades and a building being set on fire.
Demonstrators gathered across Spain to counterprotest and march on the day of Francisco Franco’s death, the fascist leader of Spain for more than 15 years. Antifascists held thousand-strong protests in Valladolid and Canillejas, in northeastern Madrid. Many fascists also protested in several cities, inciting counter-demonstrations where they did happen.
