September 17th Protests in Colombia

The protests in Colombia have settled down into a general defense of the occupied CAI police substations, although police continue to commit acts of aggression against protesters. A massacre took place late September 17th, in which the police opened fire on protesters as though they were a firing squad.

In the western Cauca department, the Misak indigenous people took down a statue of the conquistador and colonialist Sebastián de Belalcázar. The department governor condemned the actions, but several human rights and indigenous advocacy groups applaud the direct action.
