Hundreds of protesters across Eswatini took to the streets in opposition to the country’s government, the last remaining absolute monarchy of Africa. Demonstrators clashed with police and the military, setting fire to businesses and assets of the king and royal family.
Over 100 Portlanders returned to the weekly march for Patrick Kimmons, a black man killed by police in 2018, whose mother has led marches every week since July demanding the reopening of the case. Cheers of support came from many neighbors, and the police also were notified of the march when it came around to their precinct. Letha Winston (Kimmons’ mother) then stopped the march, led chants, and gave speeches regarding updates on the case.
Around 200 protesters in Chania took to the streets for a demonstration demanding the repeal of a law passed by the Ministry of Education in Greece which would allow police to enter universities again for the first extended period since the fall of the military dictatorship after a disastrous war and student uprising in 1973-1974.
Anarchists in Thessaloniki gathered in solidarity with Dimitris Koufontinas, a former member of the Greek communist 17 November group who entered a hunger strike on the 8th of January to demand his transfer to the Korydallos prison in Athens where he would receive better medical care and access to visitors.
