Health workers in a CESFAM (Family health centers) went on strike against the budget adjusting of health funds by the Piñera government, the breach of government contracts, and against the isolation of political prisoners of the national uprising. They are joining the national strike that has now gripped the country.
Dozens of protesters in the La Pincoya neighborhood of Santiago took to the streets on the Day of the Young Combatant, placing barricades and setting fires across the area. Police responded with brutal repression but were pushed back by demonstrators after gassing a residential area.
Over 100 protesters took to the streets of Valparaíso to demand the release of all political prisoners of the social uprising in Chile that began in 2019. Demonstrators burned barricades and blocked roads, but were quickly met by a small army of law enforcement vehicles that shot tear gas and water cannons, in response to which the crowd threw rocks and Molotov cocktails.
Dozens of port workers in Valparaiso took to the streets as part of a nationwide strike, demanding the government passage of the ability to withdraw 10% of a person’s pension fund in direct cash for a 3rd time during the COVID-19 pandemic. Demonstrators lit tires and blocked roads, before riot police arrived, using water cannons and tear gas to disperse the strikers.
Thousands of Tunisians returned to the streets 10 years after the Arab Spring, demanding change to the country’s endemic corruption and lack of social services to fit the needs of the people and those in renewed poverty as a result of the COVID pandemic. Despite widespread police repression with tear gas and beatings, protesters held strong in many cities across the country.
