Students at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) began protests after the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) refused to give out the December allowances given to all students of South Africa. Demonstrators then proceeded to block the university’s entrances with burning barricades, before being attacked by police, leading to several arrests.
