Thousands of Uruguayans March in Montevideo on Student Martyrs’ Day

Thousands of students took to the streets of Montevideo on the Student Martyrs’ Day in Uruguay, commemorated every year since 1968, in which dentistry student and left-wing activist Líber Arce died of his injuries after being shot by a police officer.

Arce had been shot during a protest by student unions after government forces ransacked universities on the 9th of August following a declaration of martial law implemented with the excuse of fighting the Tupamaros urban guerrilla.
