Members of the Philadelphia Chapter Sunrise Movement protested outside of President-elect Joe Biden’s de facto headquarters, demanding that he keep his pledges to protect the climate and enact sweeping pro-environmental legislation. Demonstrators then proceeded to march through downtown, and dispersed after that.
Thousands of protesters in Pereira took to the streets for a 3rd day, demanding the withdrawal of the neoliberal Tributary Reform, which would raise new taxes on basic goods and services. Police brutally attacked the demonstration with tanks and tear gas, resulting in the local police substation being burned down.
Dozens of protesters took to the streets of Antofagasta to demand the immediate release of all prisoners of the social uprising that began in 2019 as well as to demand the resignation of right-wing President Sebastian Piñera. Demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at police and burned barricades, shutting down areas of the city before later dispersing with no arrests made.
Hundreds of students in Thessaloniki marched against a new bill proposed by the Greek Education Minister Niki Kerameos, which would remilitarize police campuses with an elite police force. Demonstrators marched through the city, with frontliners locking their arms as a deterrent for any sort of police assault.
Demonstrators gathered in the thousands in the northern and central cities of Iquique and Talca against the Piñera presidency, demanding an immediate resignation of the current government. Mapuche flags were raised, with the status of the indigenous people within Chile being a contending issue within the current political climate of the country.
