On 9/11, Chile commemorated its own tragedy, in which an American-backed coup killed hundreds in a single day and resulted in the dictator Augusto Pinochet being put in power for decades in a violent overthrow of a democratically elected leftist government of Salvador Allende.
At Heroes’ Square, protesters carried photos of those who were killed under the Pinochet regime, and honor the unnamed who went missing during that time as well.
Protesters also demonstrated at the General Cemetery and Plaza Dignidad in Santiago, honoring the dead from both the September 11th Coup as well as the 2019 Chilean protests.
