After the use of live rounds on protesters in Abuja on the 8th of October, demonstrations began across the country in outrage as to what happened. SARS is widely despised due to its brutality and militarized nature, and has been protested against actively in recent days.
Dozens of protesters gathered at Syntagma Square in Athens for the release of Dimitris Koufontinas, a former member of the left-wing revolutionary group 17 November serving a life sentence; Koufontinas entered a hunger strike to demand his transfer to his old cell in the Korydallos prison in Athens, where he would again be able to see visitors and be able to receive medical care.
Hundreds of protesters in Santiago took to the streets for a round of demonstrations to demand the release of all detainees of the 18th of October Uprising, which spurred on nearly 1.5 years of protests in Chile against right-wing and neoliberal policies. Police reacted brutally to the demonstration, sending tanks and water cannons against the crowd.
Around 400 protesters marched in solidarity with the Koufontinas hunger strike in Patras, demanding that the Greek government immediately accept the former 17 November member’s request to be returned to his old cell at the Korydallos prison in Athens.
