Hundreds of protesters marched in Innsbruck in solidarity with refugees in Europe and against the horrific human rights abuses of migrants by the EU, including the creation of the pan-European border agency Frontex and the Moria concentration camp on the Greek island of Lesbos. Police assaulted the demonstration, pepper-spraying participants in the face and making several arrests.
Youth in Vienna rioted on New Year's, looting and damaging several businesses and setting off fireworks in the Reumannplatz. Several clashes with police occurred, but resulted in very few arrests of young people heavily armed with fireworks.
Dozens of Austrian activists blocked several streets in downtown Innsbruck to draw attention to the inhumane conditions in the deportation camp Bürglkopf. Demonstrators also criticized the deportations of refugees to Afghanistan, Russia and Nigeria, which were recently carried out.
