Over 100 student protesters marched in Tarragona demanding freedom for Pablo Hasel, a left-wing Catalan rapper arrested and facing charges of at least 9 months in prison for “supporting terrorism” and criticizing the Spanish monarchy.
Around 50 protesters in Portland gathered at the city’s ICE facility in opposition to fascism and demand the abolition of the border patrol agency long marred with allegations of human rights abuses. Demonstrators lit a fire at the facility’s gate, which was put out during confrontations with federal agents.
Greek vegan anarchists in Athens gathered on New Year’s Eve to protest against speciesism and brutality on animals, by the form of mass confinement and murder for meat and other products. Demonstrators marched to Kato Patisia and Agios Nikolaos, dropping leaflets and shouting slogans in front of butchers and fishmongers. Before dispersing, a banner was dropped in the Cyprus park of Patision, after which the march ended.
Around 300 protesters in Frankfurt marched after a 19-year-old Iraqi refugee died in a hospital after being arrested for possession of marijuana. While in custody, Qosay Sadam Khalaf “collapsed” in his cell and was taken to a hospital, where he ended up dying. Police attacked the demonstration, kicking and punching protesters without provocation.
