Protesters gathered in the hundreds in Mexico City to demonstrate against the state’s war on the Zapatistas via funding of paramilitaries to attack harvest storage facilities and imprisonment of Zapatista figures. The following day, a political prisoner with allegiance to the EZLN was released by the Mexican government.
Dozens of protesters in Washington D.C. marched with a shield wall on the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s murder, condemning the no-knock warrant that resulted in police opening fire into the black woman’s home and shooting her 10+ times.
Thousands of protesters marched in Athens in solidarity with the Koufontinas hunger strike, demanding the immediate satisfaction of his request to be returned to the Korydallos prison. Despite an attempt by police to stop demonstrators from gathering at Syntagma Square, their lines were broken and a retreat was forced as demonstrators began to march again to Omonia.
Protesters across New York dropped banners for a wide variety of reasons, including rent cancellation, a 2nd stimulus, and the freeing of all prisoners of ICE held in cages in the city’s detention facility. There was also a #NoNBKPipeline banner dropped from the top of a building, to compensate for the lack of activity that has been going on against it.
Youth in Vienna rioted on New Year’s, looting and damaging several businesses and setting off fireworks in the Reumannplatz. Several clashes with police occurred, but resulted in very few arrests of young people heavily armed with fireworks.
