Young Panamanians protested against President Laurentino Cortizo’s decision to exclude people less than 25 years old from the “solidarity voucher”, giving people $100 per month to alleviate the COVID-19 pandemic’s financial stress. Students blockaded several roads in response to the decision, including the Balboa and Cinco De Mayo avenues.
Police responded by opening fire with rubber bullets and arresting several students, taking them to a police station, and later releasing them without torturing them in any form.
