20-35 demonstrators in Portland arrived at the ICE facility for a 144th day, with DHS agents and police under the Unified Command almost immediately bullrushing the crowd and arresting two protesters. No unlawful assembly was declared, even though the protest was dispersed very quickly. the charges were later thrown out.
A few dozen Chileans gathered at Plaza Dignidad in Santiago for the New Year, protesting against Piñera and for amnesty for all political prisoners. Demonstrators waving the Mapuche flag were immediately attacked by Carabineros, who used water cannons against a tiny demonstration of about 25-30 people.
Police attacked Abolish ICE demonstrators at the Bergen County facility who were protesting in solidarity with the prisoners inside performing a hunger strike. Cops were filmed targeting a black protester, then arresting him. The Ridgewood for Black Liberation organization later stated that he had been released, but sustained injuries during the assault by police.
Dozens of protesters in Patras marched in solidarity with Dimitris Koufontinas, an imprisoned former member of the 17 November left-wing urban guerilla who entered a hunger strike on the 8th of January to demand his transfer to the Korydallos prison in Athens, where he would receive adequate medical care and access to visitors.
Hundreds of members of the FENATS medical workers’ union protested in the central city of Concepción to demand a higher budget for the health sector to combat COVID-19, including more infrastructure and raises for on-the-ground nurses and doctors. Many in the crowd also called for amnesty for political prisoners and the resignation of Piñera.
