Protesters took to the streets for a 134th day in Portland to demonstrate against the murder of Walter Wallace by police, and demanding a PPB budget cut of at least 50%. They demonstrated in front of a city commissioner’s house, demanding that he endorse the defunding. Negotiations opened up, with protesters and the commissioner exchanging information.
Thousands of demonstrators across Iran took to the streets against the Islamic Republic government and the Ayatollah, in a movement sparked by water shortages in the Arab province of Khuzestan. Police deployed live rounds against protesters, killing one, and crowds in several areas bombed police cars, burned tanks, and destroyed security cameras.
Belgian youth in Brussels continued to ramp up occupation of several areas into New Year’s day, clashing with police and setting fires against state repression and brutality against people’s movements.
Dozens of protesters in Antofagasta gathered to demand the release of all political prisoners of the 18th of October Uprising in Chile, which sparked a massive protest movement still going strong almost a year and a half after. Protesters placed barricades, in response to which police brutally cracked down and used water cannons.
The Indigenous Day of Rage, a planned direct action across the Americas, took place on the 11th against decolonization and violation of the land of native reservations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. One of the main direct actions took place in Portland, with the toppling of many statues.
